Keep your email when you move your website
Pointing your domain at your GoMarty site only moves your website. Your email doesn't move with it — but if your mailboxes live inside your old hosting plan, cancelling that plan deletes them, along with every email in them. Do these steps in this order and nothing gets lost.
The short version: sort your email out first, point your website second, cancel your old hosting last.
1. Find out where your email lives
If you read your email at something like webmail.yourbusiness.co.za, or your host's control panel has an "Email accounts" page, your email is part of your hosting plan. If you use Google Workspace (Gmail with your own address) or Microsoft 365 (Outlook), your email is separate — skip to step 3, it will keep working.
Not sure? Ask your host: "Is my email included in my hosting plan, and what happens to it if I cancel the hosting?"
2. Keep your email somewhere before you cancel anything
Option A — the easiest: downgrade instead of cancel. Most hosts sell an email-only plan for much less than full hosting. Ask them to switch you to email only and keep my mailboxes. Your addresses, passwords and old emails stay exactly as they are.
Option B — move to an email service. Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and Zoho Mail all host email on your own domain (Zoho has a free plan for small teams — check their current terms). You sign up, add your domain, and add the few records they give you at your domain registrar. Then copy your old emails across with their import tool before you cancel the old hosting.
3. Point your website at GoMarty
In your GoMarty dashboard, go to My website → Settings → Your own domain, type your domain and follow the steps. You change one record — the website's A record. Leave your email records (the ones called MX) exactly as they are.
If your email runs on the same address as your old website, the dashboard spots it and tells you the two extra records to add first, so your email doesn't follow the website.
4. Check, then cancel
- Open your site on your own address — it should show your GoMarty site.
- Send an email to your business address from another account, and send one from it. Both should arrive.
- Only now cancel the old website hosting.
Don't lose your domain either
Some hosts include the domain "free" with the hosting plan. Cancel the hosting and the domain may not renew. Before you cancel, check your domain is registered in your name and set to renew on its own. If it isn't, ask your host to move it to a separate domain subscription.
Stuck?
